Sev Puri

As I mentioned in this post, chaats refer to a variety of savory snacks that have this wonderful combination of flavors and texture that is indescribably delicious :) Sev Puri is one such chaat item that tastes fantastic and is  one of those things that is difficult to resist. Once you have one, you just want to have another one and then another and so it goes :)

There are many variations of sev puri, some with tomatoes, some without, some with chickpeas and some without, so on and so forth. This is a very customizable snack, you can always leave out or add in ingredients that you like or don't and make something that works perfectly for you. I even make a slightly low fat version of this snack using baked tortilla and crushed baked fries on occasion and enjoy a guilt free snack. This snack can also get ready pretty fast, once you have prepped the chutneys and the other ingredients, you can put together this snack in a matter of minutes.  So what are you waiting for, go right ahead and give this sev puri a try if you too are in the mood for some chaat this week or weekend:)

Ingredients and Method to make Sev Puri
To assemble 5 puris you would need
5 puris/ papdi (found in Indian groceries) or 5 Tortilla chips  (see notes)
1 small potato cooked and mashed
1/4 medium red onion cut fine (see notes)
1/4 cup cooked chickpeas (chana)
a dash of salt
a dash of chaat masala
Cilantro chutney as required
Dates chutney as required

For Garnish
Sev as needed (deep fried crunchy gram flour/ chick pea flour snacks) (available in most Indian groceries)(see notes for substitutions)
2 tsp finely cut cilantro (coriander leaves/ hara dhania)

On a plate place puris/ papdis/ tortilla chips so that they are not overlapping. On each puri place some mashed potato, then add onions, then cooked chickpeas. Sprinkle some salt and chaat masala.

Then add a little cilantro chutney and dates sweet chutney to the top. Garnish with sev and cilantro.

Notes:
Click on the words cilantro chutney/ dates chutney above for the recipes of each chutney.

I have been making this sev puri with some yummy salsa flavored tortilla chips that tasted pretty awesome.  So if you do not get puris or you do not want to use puris, try using tortilla chips for this dish.

Instead of sev if you are looking for something more easily available or something that is lower in calories, I have tried this with some crushed baked fries as garnish and loved that version of sev puri as well :)
